Sansum Medical Clinic founder Dr. William D. Sansum
Sansum Medical Clinic was founded in 1928 by William David Sansum, MD with the intent to "study and eventually conquer diabetes." Dr. Sansum was a pioneering researcher, the first American to successfully isolate, produce and administer insulin to treat diabetes. He came to Santa Barbara in 1920 as the director of the Potter Metabolic Clinic at Cottage Hospital, where he specialized in research into the treatment of diabetes. At that time, diabetes was a fatal metabolic disease and Dr. Sansum dedicated himself to discovering treatments for such diseases through scientific research.
NOTE: Dr. Sansum also established the Sansum Medical Research Foundation. Over the years, his commitment to research has prevailed at both the Sansum Medical Research Foundation - now known as the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute - and in the research activities of our physician investigators. However is no formal affiliation between the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute and our organization; each exists as a separate operating entity.
